Did you know it takes about eight glasses of water to clean one restaurant glass?
Area restaurants can now save that water and more thanks to "One Less Glass," a new water and energy conservation project led by Leadership Clark County and sponsored in part by Columbia Credit Union.
Participating restaurants display a small tent on tables informing customers to ask for water if they wish instead of servers automatically bringing filled glasses to the table. Currently 38 restaurants are displaying approximately 1,000 table tents in the area.
Dedicated to sustainability, Columbia Credit Union is proud to be a sponsor of "One Less Glass" and their conservation efforts.
The "One Less Glass" program was initiated by members of the 2008 graduating class of Leadership Clark County. Every year, the class breaks into teams that complete group projects focusing on a variety of issues such as education or health care. Last year was the third year Leadership Clark County had an environmental team – the group that initiated the "One Less Glass" program.
Amber Curtin, compliance officer at Columbia Credit Union, is an alumni and board secretary of Leadership Clark County. She was excited to see an environmentally-focused team in the program, especially since she feels it relates to Columbia's mission to be an environmentally responsible organization. Amber graduated from the Leadership Clark County program in 2005 and has been a board member ever since.
"I was ready to be more involved in the community, and it's a great way to learn about where I could serve," she said. As a board member, Amber now helps secure sponsorships (like the one from Columbia) and manage program content. "We want to produce a great program that will produce great leaders throughout the community."
Amber says that group projects like the "One Less Glass" program are an excellent way for local leaders to learn what they have a passion for – not to mention that it also benefits the community and the environment!
