Yard clean up supports lives in transition |
Columbia Credit Union staff members recently
gathered to do yard work at a home sponsored
by Second Step Housing, a nonprofit organization that
provides safe, affordable housing for at-risk women
and families. The credit union adopted the home,
named "Columbia House," in 2010 with a three-year
commitment of support to cover essential needs of
the home and perform special projects throughout the
year.
"Despite the cool temps and drizzling rain, we
managed to weed, power wash, plant and spread bark
dust," said Columbia Vice President of Corporate
Social Responsibility Laurie Kusch. "It looked like
the house had an HGTV network makeover when we
finished!" The credit union is planning another work day in the fall to prepare the lawn and the home's
exterior for winter.
Second Step Housing serves clients facing challenges ranging from domestic violence, drug or alcohol
abuse, mental illness and poverty, to a lack of education and job skills. All residents are committed to
goals and life plans aimed at self-sufficiency and family reunification.
