Making the move to middle school |
Entering middle school can be a challenging step for any sixth grader. Worries about dealing with bigger kids, managing the extra work, and finding support when they need it can be overwhelming. Such challenges can be especially grueling for kids in families that are struggling. To make the transition easier, the Fruit Valley Foundation offers S.T.E.P., a free, week-long day camp to incoming Discovery Middle school sixth graders.
S.T.E.P., or Students Transitioning into Exceptional People, creates opportunities for students to connect, get involved, build confidence and ultimately have a successful transition to middle school. Students from six area elementary schools completed the S.T.E.P. program during the first week of August. With help from staff and volunteers, including four Columbia Credit Union employees, the students participated in field trips, team-building exercises, question and answer sessions, and fun activities each day.
At the end of camp, students gained confidence in themselves and their surroundings, created new friendships and built relationships with their peers and adult staff. Over the course of its five-year run, S.T.E.P. camp has helped more than 250 kids transition to middle school.
"The support of Columbia Credit Union and other partners not only makes the camp possible, but also shows kids they can thrive, rather than just survive middle school," said Fruit Valley Foundation Executive Director, Greg McGreevey. By providing program sponsorships and volunteer assistance since 2007, Columbia Credit Union is proud to support children and families in the Fruit Valley community.
