Farmers Market goes eco-chic
If you're an environmentally-savvy consumer, you can go a little more green while shopping at the Vancouver Farmers Market.
The market now offers its own reusable, recyclable shopping bag. Sponsored by the market and Columbia Credit Union, each tote is designed to last up to two years and divert 416 regular plastic bags from landfills — saving enough petroleum to drive a car 30 miles.
Reuse and recycle
Manufactured by 1 Bag at a Time, the bags are made from 100 percent polypropylene (plastic #5), which is recyclable, nontoxic and allergy free. That means that when you're done with the bag, you can toss it into the recycling bin.
"These bags seem to be the best out there in terms of reduction, reuse and recyclability," said Lee Coulthard, vice president of the Vancouver Farmers Market.
If knowing that you're diverting plastic bags from landfills isn't enough satisfaction, the profits from these $3.25 bags support the local group of farmers, artists, craftspeople and food vendors that make up the Vancouver Farmers Market.
Go local
Sponsoring the bags is just one of Columbia's many green and local efforts. Our partnership with the Vancouver Farmers Market is part of our ongoing commitment to promote our local economy and environmental sustainability.
Visit the Vancouver Farmers Market downtown at Esther and 8th streets. It is open Saturdays and Sundays, April through October.
