Lighting

Columbia Credit Union uses energy-efficient lighting, including compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), in all branches and administrative offices. Join us and save energy and money by using CFLs in your home or business. Join us and save energy and money by using CFLs in your home or business.

CFLs Save Significant Energy
Small changes, such as switching your light bulbs to CFLs, can have a great impact on the environment. If every American home replaced just one light bulb with a CFL, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes a year.

  • CFLs use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer.
  • CFLs save $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb’s lifetime.
  • CFLs generate 70 percent less heat, so they can cut home-cooling costs.

CFLs Disposal
CFL bulbs contain a trace amount of mercury and should be disposed of in the same manner as other household hazardous waste products.

Buying CFLs
Don't limit yourself. CFLs are available in different sizes and shapes to fit almost any fixture, indoors and out. Choices abound for overhead lights, recessed/track lighting, pendants, ceiling fixtures, sconces/chandeliers, table lamps and yard use. The latest models offer more color options, no flickering, and instant brightness.

  • While a watt is actually a measure of power consumption, light output is measured in lumens. To get a CFL with the right amount of light, choose one that offers the same lumen rating as the bulb you are replacing.
  • Expect to pay anywhere from $4 to $20 and beyond, depending on the quality and application you choose.
  • Boost your initial energy savings by replacing bulbs where lights are on the most – the kitchen, family room, dining room, and porch.
  • CFLs are usually brighter than indicated on the package. If you’re looking for a 60-watt bulb, go for the 40-watt.
