Just because you take a vacation, it doesn’t mean your conscience has to. Extend your green lifestyle to your travels for a more meaningful way to get out of town. Travel far and away for exotic eco-adventures in places you’ve only read about. If that’s too extreme, try a green hotel or explore local landscapes. Just remember to purchase a carbon offset for your trip!
Take an eco-adventure
Try something truly adventurous for your next vacation. Take an international eco-adventure to experience the world in an extraordinary way while minimizing your ecological impact. How about taking a real African safari in Kenya or a rainforest tour through the Amazon? Check out EcoAdventures, Inc., and Eco-Adventure International for destinations and price lists.
Stay in a green hotel
If you prefer an urban experience, try a “green” hotel. Vancouver’s own Hilton was one of the first two LEED-certified hotels in the United States. But if you want to explore San Francisco, New York or a variety of other cities, it only takes a few seconds to find an environmentally-friendly hotel online.
Tour locally
If you only have time for a weekend getaway, you don’t have to travel far to experience nature’s best. There are plenty of opportunities for eco-tourism right here in the Northwest. Check out Wanderlust Tours in Bend, Oregon, for snowshoeing and moonlight canoe rides. Or head up to Olympic National Park for rafting and kayaking tours.
Visit a farm
This increasingly popular type of tourism will feel like a breath of fresh air. Great as a day trip or bed-and-breakfast getaway, agricultural tourism gives you the chance to help with farming tasks, pick fruit or vegetables, ride horses or learn about wine. It’s fantastic entertainment for families, especially those with small children who have never before seen farm animals. Visit local farms in Clark County or in Oregon.
Carbon-neutralize travel
Love to travel, but feel guilty about the pollution it creates? Whether you’re driving a few miles out of town or flying a plane halfway across the globe, you can help neutralize the carbon emissions from your trip. Calculate your emissions and purchase an offset from Carbonfund.org to support a carbon-reducing project, such as reforestation or renewable energy.
