Unfortunately even the most careful precautions are not fool proof. If you believe you're already a victim of identity theft, follow these easy steps to report the crime.
- Contact the fraud departments at each of the three major credit bureaus to request a "Fraud Alert" on your file and order FREE copies of your credit report.
- Contact the security departments at the financial institution where you hold accounts or loans that have experienced fraudulent activity.
- File a report with your local police. Contact information is listed below.
- Complete an Identity Theft Affidavit, so you don't become responsible for debts incurred by the identity thief.
- File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
