Columbia Credit Union is excited to bring members new Visa® credit cards with chip technology built in! We are working with Visa and our payment networks to implement this new technology.
What is a chip card?
EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard, and Visa, the three companies which originally created the standard currently used throughout many parts of the world. EMV chip cards contain a computer chip that securely stores the data that was previously stored on the magnetic strip.
Enjoy greater protection
Chip enabled cards provide greater fraud protection and protect your card information. Each time you use your card at a chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being used to create counterfeit cards.
Magnetic strip cards are still accepted at all national and most international retailers. If you find a merchant is not yet chip-activated, your new card will have both a chip and a magnetic strip, so you’ll still be able to swipe your card.
Whether you use a magnetic strip card or a chip card, both cards offer Visa’s zero-liability protection if your card is compromised.
To pay, insert the chip end of your card with the chip facing up and leave your card in the terminal until prompted. Then simply sign for your purchase if necessary.
