Going Green with Holiday Waste Reduction

December 24, 2020

Did you know, between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, American household waste increases by more than 25 percent? Holiday food waste, shopping bags, bows and ribbons, packaging, and wrapping paper contribute an additional 1 million tons a week to our landfills. Check out this Clark County Green Neighbors guide to learn how to recycle and properly dispose of seasonal items with the Recycling A-Z Directory and check these additional tips and tricks below.

Reduce, Reuse, and Ring in the New Year:

  • Wrap gifts in reusable bags or use old maps, posters, sheet music, fabric scraps or paper bags in place of purchasing wrapping paper. Get creative!
  • When shipping, reuse packaging materials.
  • Make sure to turn off or unplug holiday lights when they are not in use.
  • While cooking big meals, think ahead and keep the thermostat lower than usual. The heat from cooking will heat your house.

Here’s to a happy and healthy holiday season!
